The Corn Grows Ripe

This part of the school year we have been reading a new book "The Corn Grows Ripe" by Dorothy Rhoads. This book is about a 12 year old boy and how he has to start  work at a very young age. We have been taking some notes on the story and i hope you enjoy reading them.

Chapters: 1,2,3
There is a 12 year old boy named Tigre that lives with his mother, father and great grandmother. The family is poor so even Tigre the 12 year old boy is expected to do a mans work. Tigre and his father have to go to work and Tigre is very tired on his first day! The next day Tigre is still tired and couldn't go to work so his father goes by himself! When his father came back he is badly injured because a tree fell on him!

Chapters: 4,5,6
The other day Tigre goes to work instead of his father. On his way he is very scared because of the scary stories his great grandmother tells him.When Tigre finally comes home his mother starts to worry about his school work! In February Tigre gets a baby brother who is nothing like him! The bad news is that Tigre's father is not getting any better and their chickens blood is getting sucked by a vampire bat! At the end Tigre finds the bat so that the chickens don't die.

Chapters: 7,8,9
In March the Indians burn down the Milpas. People in the village are still doing there work in the smoke.All of the ash and the burning Millpas remind Tigre of Don Alfonso's book. The dry and wet seasons came early. Tigre couldn't wait to burn down his own Milpa , so his parents trust him to go but with Pedro.  When it was time to burn down the Milpa Pedro didn't show up so Tigre has to go by himself. Tigre's father was very happy with him that hw went to burn down their Milpa , while most of the people in the village didn't.  A lot of older boys were making ropes for the bull ride, so then Tigre wants to make his own rope! When Tigre was at the bull ring his rope couldn't win, so he promised next time he will!


Chapter: 10-12
It was very rainy in the village, so Tigre's father gives him a bag of corn to go and plant. Tigre's baby brother is turning 4 months and when a baby boy turns 4 months the family celebrates Hetz Mek. The family is suppose to hold Tigres brother Chan Tata on their right hip and go around the room. Tigre gets his first weapon for being a man. Its not raining for many days in the village and the crown is not going the best. They know there is no rain because the Gods are punishing the land for not celebrating the Chac ceremony. So now people want to celebrate it.  

Chapter 13-15
They are all waiting for the medicine man. All of them get to take care of different family's for the Chac ceremony. When the ceremony is over father feels it will rain again. Tigre is chopping wood and he sees a big cloud coming towards the village and he goes to tell everyone. Then rain falls. In September for the first time Tigre and his father go to the Milpas. Over there they see that fianly the Corn Grew Ripe.
